Welcome to the Hood (Canal)

A quiet place with big adventures.

Getting to Hoodsport

Driving (The Fastest Way)

Driving is the most direct method, typically taking about 2 hours depending on traffic and your chosen route.

  • Via Olympia (Southbound): Take I-5 South to Olympia, then merge onto US-101 North. This route is roughly 90 miles and avoids ferry wait times. You can check real-time road conditions on the WSDOT interactive map.
  • Via Ferry (Scenic Route): For a more quintessentially "Pacific Northwest" experience, you can take a ferry across the Sound:
    • Bremerton Ferry: Catch the ferry from Pier 52 in Seattle to Bremerton, then drive south on WA-3 and west on WA-106 along the Hood Canal.
    • Bainbridge Island Ferry: Take the ferry to Bainbridge Island, drive through Poulsbo, and then head south on US-101.
    • You can view current schedules and vehicle space availability on the Washington State Ferries website.

*Please note that if you are traveling during the peak season of Summer, ferries can get backed up, sometimes for hours. The earlier you take the ferry in the day, the better. Most of the links provided above will give you real-time wait times and availability.

Public Transportation

While there is no direct "Seattle to Hoodsport" bus, you can make the trip using a combination of regional services. This typically takes 4.5 to 6 hours.

  • Option A: Through Olympia
    1. Take a Sound Transit bus (like Route 594) or an Amtrak Cascades train from Seattle to Olympia.
    2. From the Olympia Transit Center, catch a Mason Transit bus (Route 6) to the Transit-Community Center in Shelton.
    3. Transfer to Route 11 or Route 8, which services the Hoodsport Visitor Information Center.
  • Option B: Via Kitsap Transit & Mason Transit
    1. Take the Kitsap Transit Fast Ferry from Pier 50 to Bremerton (approx. 30 minutes).
    2. Use regional connectors to reach Shelton and then transfer to a local Mason Transit route heading toward Hoodsport.

SeaTac Airport Shuttle

If you are starting from the airport, the Dungeness Line offers service from SeaTac toward the Olympic Peninsula, though you would still likely need a local transfer in a hub like Olympia or Shelton to reach Hoodsport directly.

Our favorite route: If you have the time, the drive via the Bremerton Ferry and then along WA-106 is highly recommended. It hugs the southern edge of the Hood Canal, offering beautiful water views and several great spots to pull over to stretch your legs and grab some local seafood before you reach Hoodsport.
